Cultural Poem and Visual Representation

Describe something you will never fully understand.

Prompt Response:  Something I will never understand is why people make bad decisions when they know it's wrong. For example many people smoke, drink, or do hard drugs. Other people are rude and feel very entitled to having things their way. I would never understand why though. I wonder if it's a neurological thing or just a behavioral and environmental thing. It might not even be criminal or behavioral either. Things like eating fast food instead of home cooked. It's very interesting to me and I always wonder why we as humans decide to choose the bad choice at times.  Summary: Today in class we presented our poems.  Reflection:  I felt like my poem was very strong and well done. Presenting in front of the class actually helps gain confidence in public speaking and self confidence.

Everyone has burning questions about life. Mysteries we wonder about but don’t always have clear answers for. Think about your biggest questions about existence, purpose, or the world around you.

Prompt Response: My two burning questions are: What is the full build up/timeline to government corruption across the world and What is every single thing the United States has done involving corruption, murders, disappearances, drugs, experiments, and wrongful doings? I'd like to know the answer to the first question so I could understand and look at world history from a different perspective. The second question if answered would bring a new and possibly terrifying truth to U.S history. It would debunk or prove a lot of speculations people have on the U.S government. It might even bring up more questions.   Summary: Today in class we read "I ,Too" by Langston Hughes.  Reflection: The poem was short but it had a big impact on cultural identity. The worksheet afterwards helped me practice identifying certain cultural identities like race, ethnicity, and gender.

Describe how gender roles or patriarchy influence your identity?

Prompt Response: As a male I am expected to be strong, a provider, and expected to know basic handy man solutions like how to replace a flat tire. I myself have to learn these things and be disciplined to become strong. I could learn them by looking up to older and more experienced males like my father and become strong through training and personal experiences.  Summary: In class we looked over vocabulary. Reflection: The vocabulary will help me understand this units key words. It will also help with the vocabulary quiz that is coming up.

Describe a time when you felt completely lost.

Prompt Response: I've felt lost when I lost a lot of money due to bad spending and when I had a bad job due to coworkers. During this time I stopped budgeting and planning my purchases. The job wasn't paying well and I did not have the best coworkers but I managed to save money just to spend it all and have nothing left afterwards. I have since recovered from that and I am back on track with budgeting.  Summary: Today in class I presented my mask and listened to my peers presentations as well.  Reflection: I learned more new things about my classmates, that I would have never known if I never asked. Now I could know who I would have a connection with for further group assignments.

Describe a meaningful family tradition unique to your culture and explain how it mirrors or contrasts with the cultural identity themes of expectations and roles in "Girl" by Jamaica Kincaid.

Prompt response: In my family everyone has to hold up their own weight when it comes to family holiday dinners. In the poem the mother tells the daughter how to make and prepare dinner. While the daughter had to help with dinner, everyone in my family has to help no exceptions. Whether that’s preparing the ingredients, cooking the food, or preparing the dinner table, everyone has to help. Summary: Today in class we took our pictures for our school ids. Reflection: Today I learned that we our going to have our school ids earlier this year so we can be identified throughout campus. Knowing this, I will make sure to carry my school id with me daily.

Reflect on how your cultural heritage shapes your daily expectations, inspired by "Girl" by Jamaica Kincaid.

Prompt response: From my cultural heritage my daily expectations are to clean up after myself, around the house and fix any minor issues. Similar to today's poem my mother taught me how to clean around the house and make sure I swept correctly, cleaned dishes the right way and clean the bathroom thoroughly. It's also expected in my culture to fix any issue around the house like a plumbing issue, installing any furniture, and any heavy lifting. My father has taught me how to do a lot of handy man work and proper self grooming.    Summary: Today in class I read "Girl" by Jamaica Kincaid. Reflection: In class I learned that some gender roles are passed down and taught by influence while others have to be forced. I hope that later in my life I can be an influence and teach certain roles instead of having to be aggressive or need for name calling.
